About Odemira
The municipality of Odemira, covering approximately 1,720 square kilometers, is situated in the Beja District of the Alentejo region in southwestern Portugal. It is the largest municipality in Portugal by area and is home to a population of just over 29,000 inhabitants.
Odemira faces economic challenges due to depopulation and an ageing population. Its economy heavily relies on intensive agriculture and is vulnerable to climate change, with increasing extreme weather events like floods, winds, and droughts. Climate change is further exacerbating the occurrence of extreme weather events such as floods, hurricane-force winds, and longer and more frequent droughts. The area is also prone to fires and faces additional threats from water scarcity and conflicts over water usage.
